Exosomes are small cellular structures that play a key role in cell-to-cell communication. Thanks to their ability to transfer proteins, RNA and other molecules from one cell to another, exosomes can influence the function of target cells. In the medical field, exosomes are being used in regenerative medicine and as drug delivery vehicles, opening up new possibilities for targeted therapies including hair loss treatment.

The use of exosomes in the treatment of hair loss

Exosomes can be isolated from various cell types, but exosomes derived from mesenchymal stem cells are often used for the treatment of hair loss. These exosomes are able to promote hair growth and regeneration by affecting cells in the hair follicles. They bind beneficial substances and growth factors to each other and deliver them to the hair follicles.

“Exosomes are a relatively new method of treating hair loss that started being experimented with around 2020. Studies have shown very good results and minimal side effects with this treatment.

Exosomal therapy is suitable for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata and telogen effluvium.”

Facts

  • Exosome treatment is an injectable method of promoting hair growth
  • Exosomes help blood circulation and oxygenation of the hair root
  • They also promote cell division in the hair follicle
  • This stimulates the growth of healthier and stronger hair

How do exosomes work?

Exosomes supply growth factors and thus increase angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels), which improves blood supply to the hair follicles. This improvement in blood circulation supplies the hair follicles with more nutrients and oxygen, thus promoting the growth of healthier and thicker hair. In addition, exosomes can positively influence the proliferation of dermal papilla cells, which are crucial for hair growth.

Usage and recommendations

Exosomes are recommended for the treatment of various types of hair loss, including androgenic alopecia (and telogen effluvium. Exosome treatment can also be effective for patients who cannot be prescribed or do not respond to traditional hair loss treatments, such as Minoxidil or finasteride.

Contraindications and side effects

As a relatively new therapy, the safety profile of exosomes is still under investigation. Preliminary studies suggest that the treatment is well tolerated, but as with all biological therapies, there may be risks associated with immune reactions or adverse reactions to absorbed substances. Potential side effects may include mild inflammation, redness, swelling or discomfort at the injection site. I do not recommend treatment with exosomes pregnant patients as there are no studies on the effect of this procedure on the fetus.

Comparison with plasmatherapy and mesotherapy

Exosome therapy is often compared to other hair loss treatments such as plasmatherapy and mesotherapy. Plasmatherapy is the injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) obtained from the patient’s own blood. It uses growth factors from platelets to stimulate hair growth. Mesotherapy Involves the injection of nutrients, vitamins, minerals and other beneficial substances directly into the scalp to improve the condition and promote new hair growth.

While plasmatherapy uses various components of blood plasma to promote hair growth, exosome therapy is a more targeted method. Exosomes deliver specific bioactive molecules that can directly affect hair growth processes. Mesotherapy, on the other hand, offers treatment through the delivery of substances such as vitamins, minerals and amino acids, and by its very nature does not modify cellular communication like exosomes.

Each method is different. Exosomes are a relatively new way of treating hair diseases and promoting hair growth, however, studies show very good results. It cannot currently be said that exosome treatment is more effective than mesotherapy or plasmatherapy, because each patient is individual and so are their results to different treatments.
